Delta 22-540 installed!

I completed the installation of the helical cutterhead in my Delta 22-540 planer. I followed disassembly and reassembly info found on https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXjiHSFVPBQIS1wOnHSF8d2vn9ObDBJ5V which was not as difficult as I had feared. The instructions from Ghostses provided a lot of detail and included steps not related to changing the cutterhead but it was easy to skip those. Once installed it runs well and cuts well.

Best addition ever for the delta portable thickness planer

The spiral cutter head is a fantastic add on for the Delta planer and well worth the money that I spent. The cutting operation is quieter and I have the comfort of knowing that I can quickly change a cutting insert instead of the challenge of replacing and setting the straight blades

Incredible results

So I bought my Delta 22-540 planer off of the original owner and loved it other than the chatter. I had been looking at replacing it with a helical planer, but didn’t want to fork out $800-1500 so I explored the option to clean up, regrease, and replace the cutterhead for my trusty Delta.

Out of the box, the new cutterhead felt solid, slightly heavier than the original. I ordered extra blades and the recommended 6Nm torque wrench as well. It only took me 6 hours for disassembly, cleaning, replace cutterhead and reassembly. I was blown away at the quality of the cut, MASSIVE noise reduction, and ease of dust/chip collection compared to my original straight blade. Honestly a little upset with myself for not taking pre/post dB readings, but it’s a marked improvement from before even without measurements.
